The Three Sisters

Yesterday the 4th graders cooked a dish using the Pueblo Indian's three sister foods: corns, beans and squash. We added garlic, green chile and onions for flavor, and we cooked the dish in big pans. The janitor came by to tell us that the whole school could smell the aroma of the dish cooking! I was surprised that all the kids ate the dish, and asked for seconds. We thought that we would have leftovers all week in the teacher's lounge, but the kids ate it all up! It's only the second full week of school, and already we are cooking with our students. I guess we are setting the precedent for the year because already little Jonathan asked me, "¿Maestra, mañana podemos hacer pastelitos?" (tomorrow, can we make cupcakes?)

It would be great if we could do a cooking activity with them once a week. It's worth the hard work and preparation on my part, when they are so actively engaged and learning, and yummy food is involved!
