My New Beginning

I'm really happy where I'm at.

I just finished my second day in my graduate program.

18 of us apprentices are together everyday for the next two weeks in class, learning about Curriculum Development, Social Justice in the Education system, and how to teach Science and Social students.

As soon-to-be first year teachers we are have a great support system of mentor teachers, instructional coaches and professors.

The pace of our classes is fast, hands on, and requires participation, collaboration and creativity. My favorite activity so far has been reading a pictures book about Frida Kahlo, and then all of us did self-portraits of ourselves with pastels.

The program faculty is extremely nice. They provide us with bagels and cream cheese, and fruit for breakfast, along with juice, tea and coffee. The first day they drew names to give out door prizes in the form of staplers, markers, and pens.

On Friday we will find out who our mentor teacher will be, and where we will be apprenticing for the next semester. I am really, really hoping it is with this free-spirited Cuban kindergarten teacher who teaches in a bilingual kindergarten.

What is difficult?

Sitting all day long,

and the amount of information they are stuffing into our brains,

and all the other little things I need to get done like: pay tuition, call financial aid, get books, get supplies, buy food, exercise, see friends, and in general balance my life.

and today, my coat disappeared. Somebody probably took it thinking it was theirs, so I had to ride hope on the moped without a coat, which was not pleasant! I hope I find it on the hook tomorrow!

All in all, I am overwhelmed and bubbly about my new beginning.
